Somalia’s Council of Ministers to Establish a National Identification and Registration Authority

The Council of Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) voted to establish the National Identification and Registration Authority.

On September 10, the Council of Ministers passed a bill that seeks to establish the authority.

The next step is to table the National Identification and Registration Authority Establishment Bill before the Federal Parliament for further discussion.

Lawyers from Maan Justice Group (MJG), a Mogadishu-based law firm, drafted the bill and presented it to the Council of Ministers for deliberations and approval.

Once the bill goes through all the stages in Federal Parliament, it would then become law after President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo signs it.

Thereafter, it would establish an authority that is responsible for issuing Somalis with unique legal identity that allows them to fully participate in the society and economy.
