Somalia’s COVID-19 Cases Surge to 1,098

Dr. Fawziya Abikar Nur, Somalia’s Minister of Health, announced a surge in the country’s COVID-19 cases to 1,098.

She made this announcement on Monday while confirming 35 new cases in the country.

According to the health minister, most of the new infections are a result of community transmission.

Further, she said that 24 of the new cases are in Banadir. Dr. Abikar also indicated that Puntland had recorded eight new cases while Somaliland was responsible for three.

Meanwhile, the health minister announced one more death thus bringing the number of deaths from the respiratory disease to 52.

The surge comes at the worst possible time for the country, which is also in the middle of intense flooding and a new locust invasion.

The World Health Organization has warned that a solution is needed fast to protect the country’s fragile healthcare system while avoiding a surge in the number of patients.
