Somalia’s Defence Ministry Moves to Tighten Fiscal Discipline Ahead of 2026

Mogadishu, Somalia — The Ministry of Defense in Somalia has stepped up preparations for next year’s military spending after senior officials convened on Wednesday to review the draft budget for 2026.

Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, the Minister of Defense, chaired the session, which brought together the Deputy Minister, Permanent Secretary, Director Generals, ministry advisers, and top officers from the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF) Command.

The meeting assessed short- and medium-term plans for the Ministry and the armed forces, with discussions focusing on how to align financial allocations with operational priorities.

Officials reached a firm consensus that transparency, accountability, and structured planning must form the backbone of the 2026 defense budget.

According to ministry sources, emphasis was also placed on ensuring that budget execution supports key areas such as troop welfare, procurement integrity, logistics efficiency, and continued counterterrorism operations — particularly as Somalia prepares for a full security transition from international to national forces.

The ministry is expected to refine the draft based on Wednesday’s recommendations before forwarding it to the federal cabinet for approval in the coming weeks.
