Somalia’s Elections Saboteurs Risk Visa Restrictions from the US

Individuals planning to interfere with the ongoing elections in Somalia could face visa restrictions from the United States.

The US issued this warning to elections saboteurs on February 9.

Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State under the administration of President Joe Biden, made the announcement.

He advised Somalis to embark on a path that leads to the “rapid conclusion of credible elections.”

Secretary of State Blinken said that the US government would base the restrictions on Section 212(a) (3) (C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

The law allows the government to restrict the issuance of visas to former or current Somali officials who undermine the democratic process within the East African nation.
