Somalia’s Embassy in Sudan has intervened to convince Sudanese authorities to release Somali students who had been jailed for taking part in illegal demonstrations in the country.
The Embassy confirmed that the youths were arrested in Khartoum.
However, they were later released from jail on Tuesday following the intervention of officials from the embassy.
Mohamed Sheikh Issak, Somalia’s Ambassador to Sudan, confirmed this during an interview with Somalia National News Agency (SONNA).
Ambassador Issak said the embassy intervened to facilitate the release of 10 Somali students from Sudan’s security officers who had arrested them.
He also indicated that the students were arrested last week immediately after the Eid-ul-Adha prayers and festivities.
The Ambassador reiterated his office’s commitment to serve Somalis in Sudan. He urged them to visit the embassy frequently.
Additionally, Ambassador Issak urged the students, and all Somalis in Sudan, to stay away from areas and situations that could lead to their arrest.
