Somalia’s Ex-President Promises More Protests over Electoral Reforms

One of Somalia’s former presidents has promised to proceed with the street protests on electoral reforms.

Ex-President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud issued a statement on Wednesday, December 16 to this effect.

In his statement, Mohamud said that the protests would continue and grow in intensity.

Nevertheless, he urged those taking part in the protests to maintain peace while calling on the police to avoid shooting innocent and unarmed protestors.

Mohamud told police officers that the constitution granted Somalis the right to protest or express their views peacefully.

He said that the reaction by police to Tuesday’s protests in Mogadishu was too heavy-handed.

Yesterday, the police rushed to the scene of the protests and shot four protestors dead while injuring several others.
