The Federal Government of Somalia has strongly criticized Puntland’s decision to introduce its own identification card, calling the move “irresponsible” and a “legal violation” that threatens national unity. In a statement, the Ministry of Interior emphasized that Somalia has only one official national identity, which is non-negotiable and binding for all federal member states.
The dispute highlights growing tensions between Mogadishu and Puntland over governance and sovereignty, as the semi-autonomous region takes steps that the central government views as undermining federal authority. The Somali government insists that all identification documents must be issued under the national system, rejecting any move toward parallel administrative structures.
Puntland, which has had a strained relationship with Mogadishu in recent years, has not yet responded to the latest criticism. The standoff raises concerns about further political fragmentation as Somalia continues its efforts to stabilize and strengthen central institutions.
