Somalia’s Labor Ministry Signs Agreement with WFP on Emergency Locust Program

Somalia’s Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs signed an agreement with World Food Program (WFP) on an emergency locust program.

The program, known as Shock Responsive Safety Net for Locust Response Project (SNLRP), is a government project.

Sadik Warfa, the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, signed the agreement with Cesar Arroyo, WFP’s Country Director and Representative.

The program seeks to address the effect of locust infestation on poor and vulnerable families around the country.

Through it, such households would meet their short-term food security needs.

Further, it enables vulnerable households to meet their food consumption needs, protect their livelihoods, and manage human capital assets via emergency transfer of cash.

The program comes soon after the International Development Association (IDA), a World Bank initiative, granted the Federal Government of Somalia $40 million to fight locust invasion.
