Somalia’s Leader of Disabled Persons Killed by Al-Shabaab

Al-Shabaab militants killed Sharif Mukhtaar, who is one of the leaders of persons with disabilities in Somalia.

Mukhtaar, who chairs an organization fighting for the welfare of persons with disabilities, was fatally shot in Southwest State’s administrative capital of Baidoa.

Civil rights groups in the country have strongly condemned his unwarranted murder accusing Al-Shabaab of targeting innocent civilians.

The Al-Qaeda linked group indicated that Mukhtaar has been working as a spy for the National Intelligence Security Agency (NISA) in the region; hence, the reason for taking him out.

According to Al-Shabaab officials, Mukhtaar has been informing NISA of the group’s activities in the region.

Consequently, the information he has sent to the spy group has enabled security agencies to carry out intense military operations against Al-Shabaab.

However, local residents refuted these reports saying that Mukhtaar stopped associating with NISA several years ago.

They said Mukhtaar has since focused his energy and resources in fighting for the rights of persons with disabilities in Southwest State.
