Somalia’s House of Representatives has started debating a motion on providing the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) with additional funding.
The debate started on Monday, August 3, 2020 at the Lower House.
Similarly, reports indicate that the Lower House is scheduled to discuss a motion regarding the fate of the National Independent Elections Commission (NIEC) too.
Lawmakers in Somalia’s Lower House believe the NIEC debate is necessary since the term of most of the officials in the electoral body is about to end.
Ms. Halima Ismail Ibrahim, the Chairperson of NIEC, is expected to appear in the House of Representatives during the debate to address parliamentarians on several issues.
One of the issues she should be addressing the preparations made for the upcoming polls.
Nevertheless, it is worth remembering that NIEC officials still have one more year to complete their term, which calls into question the need for debating this issue now.
Parliament would also be debating additional funding after government, through Minister of Finance, Abdirahman Beile, requested more finance for security forces.
