Somalia’s Lower House Votes for Mogadishu’s Allocation of 13 Seats in the Upper House

Somalia’s Lower House has voted overwhelmingly to allocate 13 seats in the Upper House to Mogadishu.

Reports indicate that 142 Members of Parliament (MPs) voted in favor of the motion to increase Mogadishu’s allocation in the Upper House to 13.

Four MPs voted against the motion.

Several analysts and Somalis welcomed the move saying that more women representatives are now likely to be elected.

However, several people oppose this move, which they term a “violation of the country’s federal constitution.”

It remains to be seen how the seats would be divided, though.
