MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s trailblazing boxer and Olympian Ramla Ali returned to her homeland on Sunday, marking her first visit in 33 years. The celebrated athlete, who has become a global symbol of resilience and women’s empowerment, was welcomed at Aden Adde International Airport by Women and Human Rights Development Minister Khadija Makhzumi and Deputy Sports Minister Dahaba Suusow.
Ali, Somalia’s first and only female professional boxer, fled the country with her family as a child during the civil war. Since then, she has risen to international prominence, representing Somalia on the global stage and competing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Her return to Mogadishu is being hailed as a landmark moment for Somali sports and for women’s participation in athletics. Government officials said her visit carries deep symbolic value, inspiring young Somali women to break barriers and pursue careers in fields traditionally dominated by men.
Makhzumi praised Ali’s achievements, calling her “a source of pride for Somalia” and emphasizing that her story reflects the resilience of the Somali people. Deputy Minister Suusow added that Ali’s presence will encourage greater investment in women’s sports and youth development.
During her stay, Ali is expected to meet young athletes, visit training facilities, and engage with community programs aimed at empowering girls through sports.
Ali’s homecoming, after more than three decades abroad, underscores Somalia’s growing efforts to reconnect with its diaspora and to highlight the achievements of Somalis on the world stage.
