Opposition parties in Somalia are doubtful about the system to be used in the upcoming elections in the country.
Somalia is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections in October 2020 followed by presidential polls in February 2021.
All along, the expectation has been that the country would base the upcoming elections on the highly anticipated universal suffrage system.
However, doubts are now creeping in among the country’s political leadership as to the ability and capacity for holding such polls.
Two leaders of the Forum for National Party (FNP), Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Sheikh Shariff Ahmed, addressed the press today expressing doubts over the polls.
The two leaders blamed the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) for failure to guide the National Independent Electoral Agency (NIEC) to prepare well for universal suffrage polls.
They also said that timing is running out for the polls agency to prepare for the polls, especially now that it has not met any of the milestones stipulated in law.
