Opposition parties in Somalia are to organize a national conference to discuss the ongoing elections.
Leaders of these parties slammed the ongoing parliamentary elections, which they termed “fraudulent, lacking in transparency, and unfair.”
In their view, neither the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) nor the Federal Member States (FMS) are willing to hold “free and fair elections.”
The opposition leaders believe that FGS and FMS should have suspended the polls.
They wrote to Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble to suspend the elections too.
Consequently, the leaders have now formed two committees – technical and security – to examine the elections in detail.
There are reports that the candidates could establish a national caretaker government.
Some of the opposition leaders who signed the statement included ex-Presidents Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Shariff Sheikh Ahmed.
Others included ex-Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire and Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, the leader of the Wadajir Party.
