Somalia’s President Joins Regional Leaders in Kampala for Critical AUSSOM Summit

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud departed for Kampala, Uganda, on Thursday afternoon to attend a high-stakes summit of troop-contributing nations to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

The meeting, which opens Friday, 26 April, will bring together key regional stakeholders to deliberate on the future of the AU-led security mission as Somalia progresses in its fight against Al-Shabaab and works toward assuming full security responsibilities.

The summit comes at a pivotal moment, with AUSSOM playing a crucial role in supporting Somali forces amid ongoing military operations and the planned drawdown of AU troops. Discussions are expected to focus on operational timelines, funding, and enhanced coordination between Somali security forces and international partners.

President Mohamud’s participation underscores Somalia’s commitment to a smooth security transition while reinforcing regional collaboration in stabilizing the Horn of Africa.
