Somalia’s UN Envoy Welcomes New U.S. Ambassador, Strengthens Diplomatic Ties

Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abukar Osman Baale, has extended a warm welcome and heartfelt congratulations to his new U.S. counterpart, Ambassador Mike Waltz, following his appointment as the United States Ambassador to the UN.

Amb. Baale described his first meeting with Amb. Waltz as “productive and forward-looking,” noting that their discussions centered on regional and global priorities of shared concern — including peace and security, humanitarian cooperation, and sustainable development.

The two diplomats also explored ways to strengthen cooperation between Somalia and the United States at both bilateral and multilateral levels. According to Amb. Baale, the meeting underscored a mutual commitment to reinforcing the partnership that has long existed between the two nations, particularly in promoting stability and good governance in the Horn of Africa.

“Our engagement was constructive and promising. We discussed enhancing collaboration through the UN framework and other international platforms to advance peace, prosperity, and resilience in Somalia and across the region,” Baale said after the meeting.

Amb. Waltz’s appointment marks a new chapter in U.S. engagement at the United Nations, and Somali officials hope it will help galvanize continued American support for Somalia’s development agenda and its fight against terrorism.

The encounter between the two ambassadors reflects Somalia’s active diplomatic posture at the UN, where it continues to advocate for international solidarity in addressing climate challenges, security threats, and humanitarian needs affecting millions of its citizens.

As both countries reaffirm their shared values and cooperation, the meeting in New York signaled renewed momentum in Somali–U.S. relations — built on trust, dialogue, and a shared vision for global peace and progress.
