Somaliland and UNHCR to Form a Joint Task Force on Refugees

Somaliland has agreed a formation of a joint task force with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to discuss the refugee issue.

This emerged on October 31 during a meeting between Somaliland’s President Muse Bihi Abdi and Ambassador Mohamed Abdi Affey.

Ambassador Affey is the UNHCR Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa region.

Several officials from the UN agency, including UNHCR Representative to Somalia Magatte Guisse, accompanied Ambassador Affey in the meeting with President Bihi.

Both sides discussed issues pertaining to the welfare of the refugees.

Their discussion came in the light of the recent decision by President Bihi’s government to evict Somalis from Las Anod.

A recent presidential address from Hargeisa shows that the number of refugees in the country stands at 14,000.

Consequently, they agreed on the formation of a joint task force to discuss the matter.
