Authorities in Somaliland have banned the use of plastic bags with effect from Tuesday, November 3.
An official directive from the Ministry of Trade, Tourism, and Industry declared the use of plastic bags anywhere in the country banned.
The ban reinforces a previous directive by Ahmed Silanyo, a former President of Somaliland.
Silanyo’s ban has never been implemented. Since his directive, Somaliland has continued to import, sell, and use plastic bags unabatedly.
A circular from the trade and tourism ministry stated that it has started enforcing the ban.
Abdirahman Mohamed Dek, Director General at the Ministry of Trade, Tourism, and Industry signed the official directive.
