Somaliland has announced the discovery of oil for the first time within its borders.
The breakaway region of Somaliland announced that its oil prospect in Sallahey, an area in Marodi-Jeh, had proved successful.
Somaliland’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources announced the discovery on January 10.
It has already launched scientific investigations following the spillage of a black liquid at a drilling site.
Initial research shows that the black liquid is oil.
Genel Energy, a United Kingdom firm, is now set to explore the area for more oil and embark on production.
