Somaliland Dismisses Somalia Opposition to Diplomatic Ties with Taiwan

The government of Somaliland has dismissed Somalia’s opposition to its growing diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

Early this week, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement expressing Mogadishu’s displeasure with the opening of Taiwan Representative Office to Somaliland.

In its statement, the foreign affairs ministry called Taiwan’s actions “reckless.”

Further, it hit at Taipei for attempting to infringe on the sovereignty of the country while violating Somali’s territorial integrity.

However, Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed Somalia’s stance.

It called Somalia’s response to the opening of Taiwan’s Representative Office to Somaliland “astonishing and mystifying.”

Moreover, it reminded Somalia of the numerous diplomatic relations Somaliland enjoys with countries in not only Africa but also Asia and Europe.

Somaliland’s foreign affairs ministry said the country has enjoyed sovereignty since leaving Somalia in 1991.

Hargeisa issued a statement reminding Mogadishu that Somaliland is free to engage in new diplomatic relations with whomever it wants.
