Somaliland has distanced itself from the unification plans being facilitated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia.
Yasin Faraton, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, said his government is aware that many countries would like to see a resumption of the stalled talks between Somaliland and Somalia.
However, Faraton indicated that his country would be willing to take part in those discussions as long as Somalia recognized the right of his country to exist as an independent state.
He reiterated that as long as Somalia refuses to recognize Somaliland, then the talks would remain in limbo for a long time.
He said that as long as PM Abiy and Donald Yamamoto, the US Ambassador to Somalia, continue insisting on reunification, then the talks would not materialize too.
The governments of Ethiopia and US have taken a joint approach to bring the two sides to the table although this has been met with stiff resistance from both Mogadishu and Hargeisa.
