Somaliland Government Rescinds the Tobacco Ban Two Days after Imposing It

The government of Somaliland has rescinded the tobacco ban that it had imposed two days ago in a move that could lead to more confusion.

Two days earlier, the government had banned all oral uses of tobacco in the country.

Abdirahman Mohamed Mohamud, the Director General in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism announced the initial ban.

Director General Mohamud issued the initial directive on April 13, 2020. Through the directive, the government had stopped all types of tobacco trade in the country.

Later, the Director General then issued a notice indicating that he had lifted the ban, which now gave traders license to sell and buy tobacco for oral use anywhere in the country.

The initial move adhered to the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) to ban Tobacco Oral Use (TOU).
