The government of Somaliland intends to buy food from local farmers, the Ministry of Agriculture has announced.
Ahmed Mumin Seed, the Minister of Agriculture, made this announcement on March 17 in Hargeisa.
Seed said that the ministry would launch a program to purchase staple foods from local farmers around the nation.
“We will buy food from local farmers to fulfill the promise made by President Muse Bihi Abdi recently,” Seed said.
The minister said that the program would have started by now except that the Minister of Finance is currently out of the country.
Consequently, he assured farmers that funds for buying the produce from them would be released to ensure the program kicks off in spring.
According to Seed, the program is designed to not only motivate farmers but also boost food production around the country.
