Somaliland has a new center for monitoring and controlling pests and desert locusts.
The Desert Locust Monitoring and Pest Control Center was officially opened on this week.
It is the result of collaboration between the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Somalia.
Vice President Ismail Saylici of Somaliland joined other government and FAO officials in opening the center on Thursday.
Ezana Kassa, the FAO Head of Programme, joined Vice President Saylici in opening the center.
The center, which is the first of its nature in Somaliland, would help the country to monitor and control pests and desert locusts.
FAO provided funding for the construction of the center together with the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO).
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) contributed funding for putting up the center too.
Recently, Somaliland suffered one of the worst desert locust infestation in its entire history.
In 2019, desert locusts infested Somaliland as well as other countries in the Horn of Africa region and parts of Asia.
The infestation caused food crisis in all the affected countries.
