The Human Rights Center has condemned the decision by authorities in the country to detain four journalists in Somaliland.
The four journalists were identified as Hussein Ateeye Gaafane, Abdillahi Dahir Ways, Ahmed Dirie Iltire, and Shuab Mohamed Kahim.
They have been in detention since January 16, 2021 when they were arrested.
Apparently, multiple sources have confirmed that they were arrested on the orders of the Mayor of Borama City.
However, the journalists are yet to be charged with any crime.
All the four journalists are based in the city of Borama.
Human Rights Center has described the journalists’ detention as “arbitrary and repressive.”
Yasmin Omar Haji Mohamoud, the Chairperson of the Human Rights Center, said that the journalists continuously work in an environment that seeks to silence them.
