Somaliland Isn’t Interested in Reunification with Somalia, Declares Minister

Somaliland has no intentions of pursuing any kind of reunification with Somalia, a senior government official in Hargeisa said this week.

The Minister of Information, Culture and National Guidance of Somaliland, Ali Hassan Mohamed (Ali Mareehan), clarified in an interview with Al Arabiya Television that reunification with Somalia is not an option.

The statement by Mareehan, who is also the official government spokesperson, underscores the deep divisions between Somalia and Somaliland, which has sought recognition of its independence since 1991.

Mareehan’s comments reflect the view of the Somaliland government and its approach to the issue of unity with Somalia.

Somaliland has operated autonomously for over three decades without any international recognition.
