Somaliland Launches Education Programmes on TV and Radio to Boost Learning after Closing Schools

Somaliland has launched a series of educational programmes on both TV and radio in partnership with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The programmes are necessary because of the decision by the government of Somaliland to close all formal educational institutions to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

Somaliland has implemented several measures designed to stop the spread of the pandemic in the country. Unfortunately, these include stopping children and teachers from going to school.

Nevertheless, the country’s Ministry of Education and Science hopes that its partnership with UNICEF will allow students to keep learning, which is a fundamental right of every child.

Ismail Omer, one of the Grade 8 students in Berbera, said, “I never knew that we could continue learning while at home. We are enjoying this new way of learning.”

His mother, Halimo Omer, was also enthusiastic about the programmes saying that they allow parents to guide their children while keeping the young ones safe from COVID-19.
