Hargesia — Somaliland commemorated the 65th anniversary of its independence on Thursday with a state-led celebration held at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa.
The ceremony was presided over by President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro and attended by senior government officials, military leaders, traditional elders, and members of the public.
President Irro delivered a keynote address marking the historic day when the former British Somaliland Protectorate gained independence on June 26, 1960.
He emphasized the region’s long-standing pursuit of recognition and reaffirmed Somaliland’s commitment to peace, democracy, and development.
“This day reminds us of our sovereignty, the sacrifices of our forefathers, and the dreams of generations who have worked to build a peaceful, self-reliant nation. Our resolve remains firm in the pursuit of international recognition for our independent statehood,” President Irro said.
The anniversary event featured a military parade by the Somaliland Armed Forces, cultural performances, and flag-raising ceremonies across major cities including Burao, Berbera, and Borama.
In his remarks, the President praised the role of the security forces and urged citizens to uphold unity and stability amid regional challenges.
Though Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the central government in Mogadishu, it has yet to receive formal international recognition.
However, the region has maintained relative peace and a functioning government, holding regular elections and operating its own institutions.
Thursday’s celebrations were also used to spotlight Somaliland’s diplomatic outreach and development milestones, including improvements in education, infrastructure, and investment partnerships.
International partners and diaspora communities sent congratulatory messages, recognizing Somaliland’s democratic achievements even as broader political recognition remains elusive.
The 65th anniversary marks a pivotal moment for President Irro’s administration, which has pledged to intensify efforts to solidify Somaliland’s de facto independence through strategic diplomacy and economic resilience.
