A Somaliland minister has resigned while opposing the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Ethiopia.
Abdiqani Mohamud Aateeye, the Minister of Defense, forwarded his resignation to President Muse Bihi Abdi’s administration on Sunday.
While resigning, the minister hit out at President Bihi for signing the agreement with Ethiopia without consulting Somaliland’s council of ministers.
Aateeye is from Awdal, a region that Ethiopia reportedly wants to take control of and set up a military base in, according to local leaders.
Aateeye has been one of the most loyal and steadfast allies of President Bihi. He becomes the first major officer in Bihi’s administration to quit in opposition to the MoU.
