Somaliland Police Claim Female Journalist Was Beaten for Ignoring Police Orders

Somaliland Police Force accused the female journalist who was beaten by officers of ignoring direct orders.

The police force has come under intense criticism and scrutiny after it was reported that their officers beat a local female journalist on February 19.

Hodo Gareys, the local journalist, was the victim of serious beating together with her mother while at Qudhac Dheer Central Police Station in Hargeisa.

In their response, the police force accused her of driving to the police station without respecting orders.

Faisal Heis, a spokesperson for the police force, accused the female journalist of “driving her car into the station forcefully” on Friday last week.

Upon arriving at the station, the woman picked a fight with the police officers.

Gareys has accused the officers of beating her and her mother.

She said that her mother accompanied her to the police station to report a case.

Wadani Party, one of the main political parties in Somaliland, blasted the police officers for beating the journalist. The party urged authorities to take action against the perpetrators.
