Somaliland President Launches Berbera Water Expansion Project

On March 23, 2025, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi Irro of Somaliland laid the foundation stone for the Berbera City Water Expansion Project during his official tour of the Saaxil region. The ceremony, attended by members of the Council of Ministers, regional leaders, and the General Manager of the Berbera Water Agency, underscored the project’s significance in meeting Berbera’s growing water demands.

General Manager Khadar Said Ahmed (Firiko) highlighted that the expansion would substantially enhance the city’s water supply, crucial for its status as a coastal city and a hub for livestock exports. Minister of Water Development Abubakar Abdirahman Good noted that the government is fully funding the project from the national treasury.

President Irro expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Water Development and the Berbera Water Agency for their efforts and urged swift implementation to address the city’s urgent water needs. The foundation stone laying officially marked the commencement of the Berbera City Water Expansion Project.

This initiative aligns with Somaliland’s ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and public services, reflecting the government’s commitment to sustainable development and the well-being of its citizens.
