Hargeisa, Somaliland – In a high-level diplomatic encounter underscoring growing international engagement with Somaliland, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro on Wednesday warmly received Ambassador Mirko Giulietti, the Swiss envoy accredited to both Somaliland and Somalia.
The meeting, held at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa, marked the ambassador’s official visit to the self-declared republic and was attended by senior Swiss diplomats accompanying Amb. Giulietti. The visit highlights Switzerland’s effort to maintain dialogue with both Mogadishu and Hargeisa, reflecting a nuanced diplomatic approach to the Horn of Africa.
Discussions reportedly focused on a range of issues including development cooperation, humanitarian support, regional stability, and ways to enhance Swiss engagement with Somaliland institutions.
President Irro expressed appreciation for Switzerland’s continued interest in the region and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening constructive international partnerships.
Amb. Giulietti, who is based in Nairobi, represents Switzerland’s diplomatic mission to both Somalia and Somaliland, a dual accreditation that allows for balanced engagement amid complex political realities. This visit comes at a time when Somaliland seeks greater international recognition for its self-rule, while also navigating regional and domestic political dynamics.
