As President Muse Bihi Abdi plans to travel to Kenya on an official visit, a cabinet meeting was held to discuss Somaliland’s pursuit of international recognition.
For years, Somaliland has craved international recognition albeit unsuccessfully.
Somalia is not too keen to encourage neighboring countries and the international community to recognize what it refers to its territory.
Somaliland broke away from Somalia in 1991.
However, last month, Taiwan established full diplomatic ties with Somaliland and promised to post its representative to Hargeisa. Somaliland also promised to do the same in Taiwan.
Last week, Ethiopia promised that it would be sending a full Ambassador to Hargeisa, which is Somaliland’s administrative capital.
Ahead of a planned tour of Nairobi, the Kenyan cabinet met and discussed a motion to recognize Somaliland officially.
Reports indicate that the meeting discussed the matter in July 2020 under the leadership of Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Already, the Kenyan cabinet has formed a technical committee to evaluate the merits and demerits of offering Somaliland such recognition.
The technical committee is expected to present its report prior to President Bihi’s tour of Nairobi, which is expected to take place in the next few weeks.
