Somaliland has reported seven new Coronavirus cases while donating $3 million to the newly established COVID-19 kitty.
President Muse Bihi Abdi announced the new cases while also saying that the country would support the kitty set aside for leading the fight against COVID-19 with a donation of $3 million.
According to the Ministry of Health, most of the country’s COVID-19 cases have been reported in Hargeisa, its capital city.
Authorities established the special kitty to help the country prepare adequately to combat the virulent disease that the World Health Organization categorized as a pandemic early this year.
Through the kitty, the government hopes that it will cushion the vulnerable members of the society while enabling it to deliver vital equipment and medical supplies to hospitals.
Bihi, who has led Somaliland since 2017, made the announcement on Twitter via his official handle.
Additionally, he appealed to the international partners and the business community to help the government’s efforts in ensuring that COVID-19 does not ravage the country.
Somaliland, which declared self-independence from Somalia in 1991 after a deadly civil war that killed thousands while displacing millions, is yet to suffer COVID-19 deaths.
Nevertheless, its health system is in a deplorable state just like Somalia’s, which is experiencing nightmarish COVID-19 cases and deaths.
