The government of Somaliland has sent a message of condolences to Taiwan over the death of its former President Lee Teng-hui.
Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs delivered the condolences to Taiwan.
Lee Teng-hui is credited with introducing direct elections in Taiwan during his tenure as the country’s president.
Further, the 97-year old is also rightly hailed for the role he played in standing up against China, which has always viewed Taiwan as part of its territory.
Lee died at Taipei Veterans General Hospital on Thursday.
He has been at the hospital since February when he was brought in to receive medical attention for various infections, organ failure, and cardiac problems.
On Twitter, Somaliland’s foreign ministry said, “We would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Taiwan for the death of President Lee Teng-hui.”
Recently, Somaliland and Taiwan have established strong diplomatic ties that are would be solidified through the establishment of representative offices in each other’s territory.
