Somaliland Slams Mogadishu Over Smear Campaign on U.S. Lawmakers

Hargeisa, Somaliland – The breakaway region of Somaliland has issued a sharp condemnation of what it described as a “baseless and politically motivated smear campaign” by Mogadishu against Senator Ted Cruz and several members of the United States House of Representatives over Bill H.R. 5300. The proposed legislation, now before Congress, seeks to strengthen democracy, stability, and accountability in the Horn of Africa.

In a strongly worded statement, Somaliland accused Mogadishu of spreading reckless propaganda in a bid to derail bipartisan U.S. efforts aimed at addressing the region’s governance and stability challenges. According to Somaliland, the smear tactics are a desperate attempt to obscure the realities facing Somalia while undermining constructive U.S. engagement.

“Mogadishu, mired in corruption, insecurity, and division, has neither the credibility nor the moral authority to lecture the United States Congress or to distort the truth about H.R. 5300,” the statement read.

Contrasting itself with Somalia’s federal authorities, Somaliland highlighted its record of peace, stability, and democratic institution-building, achieved through the will of its people. It dismissed Mogadishu’s accusations as “cheap disinformation campaigns” designed to mask systemic failures and reliance on international aid.

Somaliland also praised Senator Cruz and his congressional colleagues for their “principled leadership,” stressing that attempts by Mogadishu to discredit the legislation would not derail efforts to align U.S. policy with democratic values and accountability.

“Somaliland stands as the undeniable example of stability and good governance in the region, and no amount of propaganda can change that truth,” the statement concluded.
