Somaliland has announced plans to reduce the use of charcoal by individuals at the household level.
The country’s Ministry of Environment has launched a joint project with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to urge citizens to stop using charcoal.
The increased use of charcoal destroys Somaliland’s forestry.
Part of the project involves the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which many people in the country currently consider unaffordable.
Consequently, the government’s joint venture with UNDP seeks to reduce the price of LPG.
Additionally, the joint project will also see the price of propane gas reduced significantly.
SOMGAS Company has already received the greenlight to carry out the project on behalf of the government and UNDP.
The government and UNDP seek to make LPG and propane gas cheap for cooking, industrial use, and health facilities.
