The Somaliland government is actively reviewing its medicinal drugs policy to enhance the safety, efficacy, and quality of pharmaceuticals available to its citizens. This initiative aims to address concerns about the proliferation of imported medicinal products and the need for updated regulatory frameworks.
In recent years, the Ministry of Health Development has taken significant steps to strengthen the health sector. The second phase of the Health Sector Strategic Plan (2017–2021) was developed to operationalize the updated national health policy, reflecting public health priorities and aligning with national development goals. Additionally, the government has emphasized the importance of a robust health policy to harmonize and align domestic and external efforts in the health sector, aiming to tackle fragmentation and duplication.
These efforts are part of Somaliland’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage, ensuring that all individuals have access to quality essential health services without financial hardship. The government’s initiatives align with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly the target to provide access to safe, effective, quality, and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all by 2030.
By revising its medicinal drugs policy, Somaliland aims to improve the regulation of pharmaceuticals, enhance the quality of healthcare services, and protect public health.
