Somaliland Vows Not to Support Deployment of Foreign Military along Red Sea

President Muse Bihi Abdi of Somaliland has warned that his nation would not support plans to deploy foreign military along the Red Sea.

He mentioned that the countries making such plans must involve Somaliland.

Bihi said that neighboring countries must learn to demonstrate “respect” and “honor” to the government and people of Somaliland.

Early this year, Saudi Arabia and other countries announced plans to form a Red Sea task force.

The primary goal of the task force is to oversee the control of the Red Sea and formulate plans for strategic management of security-related issues along the sea’s coastline.

On Tuesday, Bihi said that his country would not allow the deployment of foreign troops on its territory, especially in the absence of proper consultation.

According to President Bihi, the Red Sea is “integral” to the wellbeing of the Republic of Somaliland.

He argued for a “diplomatic solution” of this matter involving all stakeholders.
