Berbera, Somaliland – Global logistics giant DP World has unveiled a new maritime corridor connecting the UAE’s Jebel Ali Port with Berbera Port in Somaliland, marking a significant boost for trade between the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.
Set to operate every nine days, the route is designed to improve cargo flow, cut delivery times and offer traders in both regions a more predictable logistics option. For DP World, the move is part of a broader long-term strategy to expand its footprint across Africa and position Berbera as a central gateway for regional commerce.
Once a modest coastal port, Berbera has rapidly transformed thanks to major infrastructure upgrades led by DP World. Its expanded container terminal, modernized equipment and upgraded transport links to Ethiopia — a landlocked nation of over 120 million people — have made it an increasingly attractive alternative to traditional regional ports like Djibouti.
Somaliland officials and local business owners view the new link as a lifeline for economic growth. Livestock exporters, agricultural producers and manufacturers now see a faster route to Gulf markets, while UAE-based suppliers gain direct access to both Somaliland’s consumer base and landlocked East African economies.
Beyond trade volumes, analysts say the route carries geopolitical weight. Though Somaliland remains diplomatically unrecognized by most nations, its commercial relevance is rising. By anchoring Berbera into a high-profile global shipping loop, DP World is effectively elevating Somaliland’s status in regional logistics.
If successful, the Jebel Ali–Berbera service could pave the way for additional routes — and with them, a redefined trade landscape for the Horn of Africa.
