Somaliland’s HRC Condemns Recent Arbitrary Arrests

The Human Rights Center (HRC) in Somaliland has condemned the recent arbitrary arrests in the northern breakaway region.

Specifically, the organization mentioned the decision by the authorities to arrest comedian Idiris Sa’eed Mohamed.

It also hit out at the government for arresting Mohamoud Maxamed Haji Ibrahim.

Idiris was arrested on December 2 while Ibrahim’s arrest took place four days later on December 6.

The comedian was then presented in court on December 5.

According to HRC, it was wrong for the state to detaining Idiris without any warrant or following the due process of the law.

Idiris was arrested after making a mock portrayal of President Muse Bihi Abdi.

On his part, Ibrahim fell into the hands of the police after publishing a post on Facebook that was critical of the Ministry of Interior.

Yasmin Omar Haji Mohamoud, the Chairperson of the Human Rights Center Somaliland, said that the state broke the law, especially Article 25(1).
