Somaliland’s Information Ministry Clashes with SOLJA over Media Licenses

The Ministry of Information, Culture and National Guidance has clashed with Somaliland Journalists’ Association (SOLJA) over a recent decision on media licenses.

On November 22, the ministry directed all media houses in the country to renew their licenses.

However, SOLJA is outraged at the move by the information ministry.

In its protest note, the organization said that the ministry had no role to play in ordering media houses to renew their licenses.

Instead, SOLJA sent out invitations to owners of private media houses in Somaliland to a meeting to discuss the ministry directive.

Mohamoud Huto, the Chairperson of SOLJA, said the constitution has defined the institution in charge of issuing licenses to media houses.

According to Huto, the information ministry broke the law by issuing this command.
