In this week’s cabinet meeting, chaired by President Abdirahman Mohamed Irro, Somaliland’s Minister of Interior and Security, Abdalle Mohamed Arab, provided an in-depth briefing on the current security situation across the country. The minister reassured the cabinet that peace and stability continue to prevail in all six regions of Somaliland, with both law and order being effectively upheld and the political climate remaining stable.
The minister highlighted that the security forces have successfully maintained peace and thwarted any significant threats to national security, ensuring a calm environment for citizens and businesses alike. This strong security posture comes despite the challenges posed by regional conflicts in the Horn of Africa, further emphasizing Somaliland’s commitment to maintaining a peaceful and secure environment for its people.
However, despite the positive security outlook, Arab drew attention to an emerging concern: the rising number of road traffic accidents.
These accidents have become a pressing public safety issue, posing a serious threat to the well-being of Somaliland’s citizens. The minister noted that these accidents are increasingly frequent and cause numerous fatalities and injuries annually.
In response to the growing concern, he called for the development of a comprehensive national strategy to address road safety. This strategy would involve better enforcement of traffic laws, the introduction of awareness campaigns on safe driving practices, and investment in road infrastructure to reduce accidents.
He emphasized that the protection of lives should be a priority for the government, and urgent action is required to tackle this public safety challenge.
President Irro acknowledged the gravity of the issue and assured the cabinet that the government would prioritize the creation of a national framework to address road safety concerns. The cabinet agreed on the importance of coordinating efforts to protect citizens while continuing to safeguard the security gains made across the country.
