Somaliland’s Local Council and Parliamentary Elections Set for May 31

President Muse Bihi Abdi has set May 31 as the date for local council and parliamentary elections in Somaliland.

A statement dated February 3 from the Office of the President indicates that Bihi has already signed the decree setting the elections date.

By signing and issuing the presidential decree, Bihi throws his weight behind the proposal by the Upper House (Senate).

Furthermore, he also agrees with the recommendation by the Somaliland National Elections Commission (NEC) to set aside May 31 as the date for parliamentary and local council polls.

Abdirashid Mohamoud Ali, the Chairman of the National Elections Commission, submitted the elections date proposal to Bihi.

Last year, NEC and the three main political parties in Somaliland signed an agreement on August 23, 2020 stating that the country would hold elections within nine months.
