Somaliland’s NEC and Political Parties Agree to Hold Elections by May 2021

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) of Somaliland and three main political parties have agreed to hold elections in the country by May 2021.

Therefore, candidates vying for seats in the House of Representatives and local city councils have the next nine months to prepare for the polls.

Furthermore, NEC and the parties agreed to use the last electoral law for the upcoming polls.

The announcement was made on Sunday after the NEC met with the main parties: Kulmiye, Waddani, and UCID.

The Chairman of Waddani Party, Abdurrahman Iron, made this announcement while addressing the media on August 23.

Somaliland has not held elections for members of the House of Representatives and local councils since 2010 and 2017 respectively.

Constant disagreements among politicians have allowed members of the House of Representatives and local councils to serve after their terms in office expired.
