The leader of the main opposition party in Somaliland has spoken out strongly against the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Ethiopia last week.
Hirsi Ali Haji Hassan, the leader of Wadani party, hit out at President Muse Bihi Abdi for signing the deal with Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Monday, January 1, 2024.
The agreement grants Ethiopia direct access to 20km of Somaliland’s coastline.
Hirsi mentioned that the agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia is “shrouded in darkness.”
“Although we treasure the recognition, friendship, and cooperation between ourselves and Ethiopia, we cannot accept the agreement as it is,” added the Wadani opposition party leader.
The opposition politician blamed Bihi’s administration for failing to divulge the terms of the MoU to the public.
