The Director General in the Ministry of Health has clarified that all morgue fridges in all public hospitals in Somaliland are free.
He said this while issuing a warning to public hospitals that feel tempted to charge fees on such services around the country.
Dr. Mohamed Abdi Hergeye, the DG in the health ministry, said this while addressing members of the media.
Further, he says, “All public health facilities supported by the government are prohibited from charging fees to anyone who needs to use hospital freezers.”
Additionally, he said each county government would cater for all expenses – including utility bills.
This news comes as a huge relief to families that are unable to pay the fees public hospitals demand to keep the remains of their loved ones in morgue freezers.
The announcement comes after Mukhtar M. Elabe’s family was unable to pay the $200 that Burao Hospital asked to preserve his remains while awaiting further investigation by the police.
