Somaliland’s Regional Health Official Quits over Rising COVID-19 Deaths

A regional health official resigned on March 31 as the number of deaths from COVID-19 increased substantially in Somaliland.

Dr. Adam Asayr, the Ministry of Health coordinator for Togder Region, tendered his resignation on Wednesday.

He cited the increasing numbers of COVID-19 deaths as the primary reason for his resignation.

Additionally, Dr. Asayr noted that the deaths were the direct result of negligence on the part of health officials and members of the public too.

In his view, the Togder Regional Quarantine Center has ignored the laid down procedures thus exposing more people to the likelihood of contracting COVID-19.

His observations point at a lackluster culture where people enter and leave the quarantine center at will without any observation.

Dr. Asayr urged members of the public to observe health ministry’s directives.

He urged them to wear facemasks, keep social distance, and wash their hands regularly or sanitize frequently to curb the spread of the deadly disease.
