Sanaag Specialty Hospital, which is in Erigavo, opened its doors to members of the public with effect from Tuesday, July 27.
The hospital would serve patients from a region that’s renowned for producing frankincense resin.
Patients from a region that has a population of over 600,000 would now have access to quality, accessible healthcare.
An organization known as doTERRA Healing Hands Foundation partnered with the Ministry of Planning, Ministry of Health, Response-Med, and tons of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to build the hospital.
Its construction has lasted the last four years.
Dr. Russell Osguthorpe, doTERRA’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO), said that locals had been forced to travel for more than 12 hours in the past to access medical assistance.
“So many lives were lost during the long agonizing journeys to seek medical help. Many people were unable to even make the journey,” Dr. Osguthorpe said.
The new hospital will have a staff of more than 100 people in addition to the CMO, senior medical officer, and specialist doctors.
