The Investigative Dossier, a VOA Somali program, has discovered that dozens of Somalis continue working at projects funded by the United Nations despite worsening insecurity.
Al-Shabaab militants have been at the forefront in sending death threats to the tens of Somali workers at UN-funded projects.
Recently, nine casual workers lost their lives when the site they were working on was attacked by Al-Shabaab extremists.
The workers stationed to work on the Mogadishu-Afgooye Road were clearing bushes around the site when the militia struck.
According to UN officials conversant with the project, the bushes had to be cleared since Al-Shabaab extremists had been using them as their hideouts.
Nevertheless, that incident has not discouraged authorities from sending more Somali workers to such sites.
Consequently, human rights activists are now asking the UN to bear the burden of keeping the workers safe.
They have also urged the government to work closely with the UN to ensure that the sites are safe for all workers.
